Job Summary
The Department of English is seeking a Student Research Intern for the Fall 2025 semester. The Student Research Intern will assist the Professor on a research project. This research project, Translingualism and AI Writing Tools, investigates the intersection of AI writing tools, translingualism, and digital colonialism. It aims to promote linguistic justice by developing a transnational peer tutoring platform connecting universities in the U.S. and Mexico. The project critically examines how AI writing tools can marginalize non-Western languages and knowledge systems and explores ways to decolonize these technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to an annotated bibliography on AI writing tools and linguistic justice.
- Research inclusive large language models (LLMs) that support translingual writing.
- Schedule and coordinate virtual meetings between peer tutors from partner institutions.
- Take detailed notes during meetings and tutoring sessions.
- Assist in conducting and transcribing interviews with peer tutors.
- Support the development of training modules for AI-assisted tutoring.
Minimum Qualifications
Open to Humanities majors only (Art, Art History, English, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Modern Languages, etc.)
- Interest in writing, tutoring, and educational technology.
- Curiosity about the use of AI in writing and education.
- Dependable, organized, and able to work independently.
- Some knowledge of Spanish is preferred but not required.

- Applicants must be currently enrolled as a student at FIU with a minimum of six (6) credits as an Undergraduate student or three (3) credits as a Graduate student during the Fall and Spring semesters.
- During the Summer semesters, Students need only remain enrolled and are not required to take credit hours, but cannot have graduated.
- Upon decreasing credit hours or graduating, student employment must end.
Work Schedule
- 10 - 12 hours a week. Not to exceed 144 hours per semester
Advertised Salary
$18.00/hour
